United Evaluating Its Merger Options

The chief executive of United Airlines, Glenn F. Tilton, indicated Monday that the carrier’s efforts to find a partner would continue after a rival, Continental Airlines, abandoned merger talks on Sunday.

“Each airline has options and will make its own decisions,” Mr. Tilton said Monday in a message to employees. “We continue to evaluate our options and will do what is right for United.”

Continental said Sunday that it planned to remain an independent carrier, a decision that changed the complex game of musical chairs that the airline industry is playing after the merger announcement last week by Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines.

UAL is now expected to push to reach a deal with US Airways, which it had also been talking to about a merger, people involved in the talks said.
