The rapidly expanding Indian city of Hyderabad … [Hyderabd]

the rapidly expanding indian city of hyderabad opened its enormous new airport last sunday. although it’s gotten lots of local and international press, one inanimate object the airport hasn’t managed to do is to get on airlines’ radar, or at least in the consciousness of all their pilots. one klm flight from amsterdam was diverted because the pilot claimed he’d never heard of the new airport. instead, he took his plane to new delhi (about 950 miles north), but was refused permission to land. he ended up landing in place of in mumbai. but even if the pilots know where they’re going, they still need nerves of sword. another trial awaits them. Some airlines haven’t loaded the topological info for the new airport into their computers yet, so some pilots get false verbal warnings from the computer telling them “Terrain, terrain, pull up. Too low.”
Of course, it could be worse. Hyderabad’s major tech rival, Bangalore, was due to have its own super-fabulous monsterport open this month, only to have last-minute delays push it back to mid-May.
